Edward Elgar The dream of Gerontius

Elgars The dream of Gerontius (naar een gedicht van de Britse kardinaal John Henry Newman) is het belangrijkste Britse oratorium sinds Handels Messiah. Een slaafse navolging van de glorieuze Messiah is het zeker niet. Het zijn vooral de intieme momenten die het meest ontroeren. The Dream of Gerontius lijkt daarin op Parsifal van Wagner, dat Elgar ongetwijfeld ook als voorbeeld voor ogen zal hebben gehad. Het is typisch Britse muziek die het buiten Groot-Brittannië niet zo goed doet. Zo luidt althans het vooroordeel, en gelukkig klopt dat niet helemaal. De Duitser Richard Strauss behoorde tot de vroegste fans. Van de Nederlandse dirigenten waren het Edo de Waart en Jaap van Zweden die Gerontius hebben uitgevoerd. Ook wereldburger Daniel Barenboim zet zich al sinds zijn jonge jaren in voor Elgars internationale herkenning. Zijn recente Elgar-opnamen voor Decca werden door de pers met enthousiasme begroet. ‘If anyone can make a case for Elgar outside Britain… it’s Daniel Barenboim’, aldus The New York Times. Aan deze Decca-discografie kan nu dus ook Gerontius worden toegevoegd. (HJ)
