Erik Chisholm Violin concerto

De Schotse dirigent, pianist en componist Erik Chisholm was een belangrijke spil in de diverse muzikale werelden van onder andere Schotland, Groot-Brittannië en Zuid-Afrika. Hij verzorgde de Britse premières van opera’s waarvan wij ons niet meer kunnen voorstellen dat ze ooit onuitgevoerd waren (Les Troyens & Béatrice et Bénédict van Berlioz , Idomeneo van Mozart ). Chisholm was tevens de concertmanager die het Schotse publiek bekend maakte met Bartók en Hindemith . Hij was een echte, stoere modernist. Toch liet hij zich ook inspireren door de tradities van de Schotse volksmuziek en de klassieke Indiase muziek. Op deze cd klinken die Schotse invloeden vooral door in de stukjes uit de pianobundel From the true edge of the great world (hier gespeeld in de georkestreerde versies). Het ambitieuze vierdelige Violin Concerto laat Chisholm van zijn meest modernistische kant horen. De Dance Suite voor orkest en piano is lichter van toon. Deze muziek doet wel wat denken aan de neo-barokke stijl van Hindemiths Kammermusik. (HJ)
