Het kan een zegen en een vloek zijn om vergeleken te worden met grootheden uit het verleden. Al voor haar debuutalbum verscheen werd de toen 23-jarige Cécile McLorin Salvant door een journalist van The New York Times vergeleken met Ella Fitzgerald , Billie Holiday en Sarah Vaughan . Dat is ook wel te begrijpen, want McLorin Salvant grijpt net als dat trio grootheden terug op het American Songbook. De zangeres neemt haar tijd voor die standards in uitgesponnen versies waarin ook haar begeleidende trio (piano, contrabas en drums) mag uitpakken met afgemeten improvisaties. McLorin Salvant stopt elk nummer vol met timbrewisselingen en dramatiek en lijkt vastberaden om in elk nummer de uitgebreide mogelijkheden van haar stem te etaleren. Indrukwekkend, maar na bijna twee uur muziek ook een beetje vermoeiend. (PdK)
