Silence & Music. De titel van het album is ontleend aan een gedicht van Ursula Wood, de (tweede) echtgenote van componist Ralph Vaughan Williams . Het gedicht vertolkt hoe de muziek ontwaakt vanuit de stilte. Vaughan Williams zette het gedicht in 1953 op muziek. Hij droeg het op aan weer een ander koorwerk van veertig jaar daarvoor, te weten Blue Bird van Charles Villiers Stanford. In dat bewuste koorwerk van Stanford schildert een hoge sopraanlijn de ruimte van de hoge blauwe lucht, het stromende water, en het flitsende blauwe vogeltje dat daar doorheen schiet. Dirigent Paul McCreesh’ opmerking over dit prachtige koorwerk moet wel onvertaald blijven, vanwege de poëtische woordkeus: ‘Only twice in my life have I observed that briljant flash of light as a kingfisher (ijsvogel) darts down a river, or along a lakeside.’ De genoemde koorwerken maken deel uit van het mooie recital dat het loepzuiver zingende Gabrieli Consort wijdde aan Britse seculiere koormuziek uit de 20ste eeuw. ‘This is a beautifully constructed programme, sung with consummate assurance and self-effacing artistry’, aldus BBC Music.
