Het verhaal achter de '68 Comeback Special behoort tot de mooiste van de 20e-eeuwse popgeschiedenis. Ooit was Elvis Presley de grootste rock-'n-rollzanger, maar eind jaren 60 zat daar de klad in. Hij acteerde voornamelijk nog met afnemend succes in mierzoete Hollywoodfilms. In die lijn bedacht zijn dubieuze manager Colonel Parker dat Elvis voor de Amerikaanse televisiezender NBC mooi een gelikte kerstshow kon doen. De jonge regisseur en producent Steve Binder dacht daar anders over en wilde Elvis op informele wijze zijn eigen verhaal laten vertellen, omlijst met veel muziek. Parker moest in toom worden gehouden, maar Elvis hervond zo zichzelf als de mateloos getalenteerde artiest die hij was. In de televisieshow treedt hij op als charismatische bink in zwart leer terwijl hij met oude bandleden dolt en hits ophaalt. Ook in de meer gechoreografeerde opnames van Guitar Man en If I Can Dream zijn we getuige van de glorieuze terugkeer van The King. Deze luxe box bevat, naast de officiële special en het begeleidende album, een schat aan rest- en repetitieopnames, afgemaakt met een schitterend geïllustreerd boek waarin onder andere Binder en Presley's weduwe Priscilla aan het woord komen.
