Album

De Amerikaanse gitariste Mary Halvorson behoort tot de voorhoede van de hedendaagse avant-garde. De grens tussen compositie en improvisatie beslecht zij met eigen bands of prominente collega's als Anthony Braxton en Marc Ribot . Op Code Girl profileert Halvorson zich voor het eerst ook als songwriter en stelt zij haar spel ditmaal in dienst van vocale muziek. Hulp krijgt zij onder andere van trompettist Ambrose Akinmusire, maar vooral zangeres Amirtha Kidambi heeft de hoofdrol. Soepel en expressief zingt zij de grillige songs waarvoor Halvorson zich liet beïnvloeden door singer-songwriters als Robert Wyatt en Elliot Smith . Er klinkt artrock door op Code Girl, gespeeld met grote vrijheid, abstractie en jazzy ondertonen. Haar kwintet speelt daarbij als een hechte band die – met Kidambi voorop – de wondere en authentieke muzikale wereld van Halvorson tot leven brengt. (MR)
