Edward Elgar Caractus op 35

Album

De immer populaire Enigma variations (Londen, 1899) vormden het keerpunt in Elgars carrière, althans qua internationale bekendheid. Elgars eerdere successen waren bescheidener, hoewel zijn composities ambitieus genoeg waren. In het decennium voor de Enigma Variations manifesteerde hij zich met koorcomposities over grote epische en historische thema’s. Waaronder de cantate Caractacus (1898), die al bijna iets weg heeft van een semi-opera. Het verhaal gaat over de strijd van de Britten (of eigenlijk Kelten) tegen de Romeinen (in de persoon van keizer Claudius). Caractacus zal zelfs onder Elgar-liefhebbers amper bekend zijn. Maar misschien komt daar verandering in met deze nieuwe uitvoering onder leiding van Martyn Brabbins. De muziek is namelijk opvallend goed, de volwassen Elgar van de Enigma variations en de latere oratoria (o.a. The Dream of Gerontius) is duidelijk herkenbaar. Deze uitvoering werd Editor’s Choice in Gramophone. (HJ)
