De orkestouverture was het genre waarmee het genie van de jonge Mendelssohn tot wasdom kwam. Tussen zijn 17e en 20ste voltooide hij een schitterende trilogie met de ouvertures Ein Sommernachtstraum (naar Shakespeare), Meerresstille Und Glückliche Fahrt (naar Goethe) en The Hebrides. Amper bekend is de zogenaamde Trumpet Overture, waarvan het hoge opusnummer (op.101) ons op het verkeerde been zet. Het gaat hier namelijk niet om een laat werk. Mendelssohn voltooide deze ouverture nog voor die van Ein Sommernachtstraum (en na het briljante Octet voor strijkers). De bijnaam is raadselachtig, want zo’n groot aandeel heeft de trompet hier niet. Waarschijnlijk is de bijnaam afkomstig uit Mendelssohns familie, die in het openingsmotief een trompetsignaal beluisterde. Hoe dan ook, deze ouverture schijnt een lievelingsstuk geweest te zijn van Mendelssohns vader. (HJ)
