Frank Zappa The Mothers 1970

Album

Na het ontbinden van The Mothers Of Invention maakte Frank Zappa zijn onvolprezen jazzrockalbum Hot Rats (1969). Hij ging echter niet verder in deze lijn, maar koos voor een nieuwe versie van zijn band (teruggebracht tot 'The Mothers') die rock en satire samenbracht. Hoe deze bezetting met de twee lijvige zangers en lolbroeken Howard Kaylan en Mark Volman ( Flo & Eddie ) klonk, is te horen op de live-albums Fillmore East: June 1971 (1971) en Just Another Band From L.A. (1972). Dit Boxje levert hier een aanvulling op met veel, nimmer officieel uitgebrachte live-opnames en een onvoltooide studiosessie. Hoogtepunt is een compleet optreden voor het Nederlandse radioprogramma Piknik dat een goed geluid heeft. De overige live-opnames gaan vooral gebukt onder een minder goede geluidskwaliteit. De grappen en grollen van Kaylan, Volman en Zappa zelf, zijn vaak nauwelijks te verstaan. Maar ook het repertoire van oude Mothers Of Invention-nummers als Mother People en Mom & Dad, voegt weinig toe aan voornoemde live-albums, of het complete concert Carnegie Hall dat in 2011 werd uitgebracht.
