De dubbelaar The Beatles (of The White Album, zoals het bekend kwam te staan) laat de eerste tekenen van desintegratie bij de eens zo hechte groep horen. Niet dat de individuele leden te lijden hebben aan een gebrek aan inspiratie – integendeel, ze lijken de liedjes uit hun mouw te schudden – maar ze kiezen er steeds vaker voor deze alleen uit te werken. In plaats van een gefocust groepswerkstuk is The White Album een bonte verzameling losse stukjes, meesterlijk tot een eenheid gesmeed door de uitgekiende tracklist van producer George Martin . De witte hoes verbeeldt de terugkeer naar de eenvoud, na de vergaande studio-experimenten van Sgt. Pepper en Magical Mystery Tour . Met name John Lennon profiteert hiervan, en zelf beschouwde hij zijn liedjes op de witte dubbelaar (Dear Prudence, Happiness Is A Warm Gun, I’m So Tired) als zijn best gelukte. Julia is een sleutelnummer in zijn oeuvre, een ode aan zowel zijn moeder als Yoko Ono . McCartney excelleert in akoestische miniatuurtjes (Blackbird, Mother Nature's Son, I Will), en daarnaast levert hij met Helter Skelter de smerigste rocker in het Beatles-repertoire af. Voor het eerst is er ook volop ruimte voor bijdragen van George Harrison (met een gastbijdrage van Eric Clapton op diens While My Guitar Gently Weeps) en zelfs Ringo (Don’t Pass Me By). De geluidscollage Revolution # 9 kent voor het eerst geen songstructuur en behoort tot de meest omstreden nummers van The Beatles. (MS)
