Na het echec van Let It Be besloten The Beatles om nog eenmaal de meningsverschillen opzij te zetten en een goede plaat te maken. Dat lukte wonderwel, tijdens de opnames van Abbey Road viel geen onvertogen woord en het album bevat enkele van de mooiste nummers uit hun oeuvre. Hoewel de plaat verrassend coherent is, laat het al voorzichtig de contouren van de solocarrières van de individuele bandleden horen. Paul McCartney zou later op albums als Band On The Run en Venus & Mars voortborduren op het medleygegeven van kant B. John Lennon laat met Come Together en I Want You (She’s So Heavy) een voorproefje horen van de uitgeklede rock van zijn eerste soloalbums. Maar de grootste revelatie waren de bijdragen van George Harrison, die met Something en Here Comes The Sun tekende voor de hoogtepunten van de plaat. Het was dan niet zo vreemd dat juist zijn solocarrière (aanvankelijk) het meest succesvol was. Bovenal was Abbey Road een triomf voor George Martin; de productie was om door een ringetje te halen en zijn orkestrale arrangementen liepen vooruit op de symfonische rock van de jaren zeventig. Abbey Road was een waardig afscheid van wat algemeen beschouwd wordt als de beste band aller tijden. (MS)
