Henry Purcell was 18 jaar oud toen hij Matthew Locke opvolgde als hofcomponist onder koning Charles II. Voor het hof componeerde hij kerkmuziek, ceremoniële muziek, toneelmuziek, politieke versjes, schunnige versje, en wat niet al. Deze serie van The Sixteen bevat steeds een of twee van Purcells Welcome songs per cd, aangevuld met vocaal werk uit de andere categorieën. Deze Welcome songs waren er om de koning in het zonnetje te zetten tijdens verjaardagen of andere feestelijke gebeurtenissen. Zoveel mooie muziek voor iemand die feitelijk een lapzwans was. Ter verontschuldiging moet gezegd worden dat Charles tot zijn 18e in ballingschap leefde, waarbij hij afhankelijk was van de gunsten van anderen. In het begin van zijn koningschap deed hij nog zijn best. Luiheid en het najagen van al dan niet seksueel plezier ondermijnden echter zijn reputatie. Zijn luiheid had overigens wel het voordeel dat hij zich nergens mee bemoeide. Met als gevolg dat de wetenschappen, de economie en de kunsten bloeiden tijdens zijn regeerperiode. (HJ)
