Na soundtracks voor sinistere films als The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2010) en Gone Girl (2014), zou je niet direct verwachten dat Trent Reznor en Atticus Ross ja zouden zeggen tegen een score voor een Pixar kinderfilm. Laat het nou zo zijn dat Soul (regie: Pete Doctor) een erg volwassen ondertoon heeft. Daarnaast bevat de film sfeervolle jazzmuziek van Jon Batiste. De film gaat namelijk over een jazzmuzikant die een out-of-body-ervaring ondergaat en zijn weg terug moet vinden naar het 'echte leven'. De film heeft als moraal dat je moet genieten van de kleine dingen die je wellicht als vanzelfsprekend ervaart. De jazznummers sluiten daarbij mooi aan op de levendigheid die de film zijn karakter meegeeft, terwijl de elektronische- en pianocomposities van Reznor en Ross - onmiskenbaar van hun hand - meer aansluiten bij de spannende en emotionele stukken in de film. De soundtrack is opzichzelfstaand al zeer de moeite waard, maar ook de film verdient het zeker om bekeken te worden. (JvQ)
