Gustav Holst The perfect fool

Deze sprookjesopera was Gustav Holsts eerste grandioze mislukking sinds het succes van The Planets. Het publiek tijdens première in 1923 wist er niets van te bakken. Was dit nou grappig? Had het een diepere symbolische betekenis? En wat te denken van de flauwe Wagner- en Verdi-parodieën? Holst was kennelijk beter als componist dan als librettist en dramatist. Deze oude radio opname van de BBC (mono, 1967) komt uit een serie met Holsts minder bekende muziek. De toelichting in The Radio Times van Holsts kritische dochter Imogen Holst is zowel verhelderend als relativerend. Van de gesproken dialoog is toen veel geschrapt, tot opluchting van Imogen. En zo is er toch nog wel plezier te beleven aan de bij vlagen briljante muziek. En dan vooral het openingsballet, waarin de tovenaar de geesten van aarde, water en vuur oproept. Waarschijnlijk alleen geschikt voor zeer toegewijde Holst fans. (HJ)
