Star Wars , Indiana Jones , Close Encounters of the Third Kind , Jaws , wie is er niet groot mee geworden? Naar verluidt oogde het publiek in de Weense Musikverein wat jonger dan gebruikelijk. Zwarte concertkleding mengde zich genoeglijk met t-shirts en jeans. Verder veel bravo's, applaus en staande ovaties. De 87-jarige John Williams was zo vriendelijk om de muziek zo nu en dan mondeling toe te lichten. Hij veroorloofde zich zelfs de opmerking dat de muziek nu eindelijk tot zijn tevredenheid kon worden beluisterd zonder afleidende filmbeelden. De wrang-ironische opmerkingen zijn te begrijpen als we luisteren naar de schitterende fuga (Sharke Cage Fugue) uit Jaws: een waardig concertstuk à la Hindemith en Copland , dat inderdaad prima op zichzelf kan staan. Maar misschien was het wel het grote voorrecht van Williams dat hij als filmcomponist niet hoefde te kiezen voor deze of gene stroming. Wat dat betreft heeft het programma iets van een multiversum, waarin alle opties naast elkaar bestaan en waar E.T. zich overal thuis kan voelen. Dit tot vermaak van jong en oud. (HJ)
