De Amerikaanse band The Beach Boys had met Pet Sounds (1966) een van de mooiste en meest invloedrijke popplaten tot dan toe uitgebracht. Daarna begon het commercieel en anderszins stilletjesaan bergafwaarts te gaan met de groep rond de gebroeders Wilson. De Amerikanen maakten de plaat Carl And The Passions - “So Tough” in 1972, waarvan de verwarrende titel geen goed voorteken was. Met belangrijkste songwriter Brian Wilson veelal in de lappenmand, waren de overige leden meer op eigen houtje muziek gaan schrijven en produceren. Het bandgevoel begon zo uit zicht te raken. De tijd die de band in Nederland doorbracht betekende wat dat betreft een kentering. De muzikanten - die zich tijdelijk vestigden in woonplaatsen als Hilversum, Bloemendaal en Laren - hadden hun gehele homestudio meegebracht en namen er het beter ontvangen album Holland op, dat uitkwam in 1973. Holland bevat het fraaie epische drieluik California Saga en Sail On, Sailor, hun eerste hit sinds tijden, dat tevens de titel werd van deze boxset. Een mooi overzicht van deze intrigerende periode in de geschiedenis van The Beach Boys. (JV)
