Het boekje bij de cd bevat een foto van The Gesualdo Six in de crypte van St Martin-in-the-Fields in Londen. Die kerk is van lang na de dood van William Byrd, maar dat maakt voor het effect niet uit. De zangers zitten rond een tafel met daarop brandende kaarsen en kandelaars. Om hen heen is het pikkedonker. Voor een theaterproductie zingen ze Byrds Mass for Five Voices, alsof het een clandestiene bijeenkomst is in de late 16e eeuw. In het protestantse Engeland was het componeren van een katholieke mis zoiets als een verzetsdaad. Het had dan ook slecht met Byrd kunnen aflopen wanneer hij niet de bescherming had genoten van de muziekminnende koningin Elizabeth I. Byrd componeerde drie Latijnse missen voor respectievelijk vier, drie en vijf stemmen. De missen hebben mogelijk eerst in het geheim gefunctioneerd voordat Byrd rond 1592-95 de moed of halsstarrigheid had om ze openlijk te publiceren. De Mass for Five Voices, die vermoedelijk als laatste ontstond, staat centraal op deze cd van The Gesualdo Six. (HJ)
