De eerste albums van Metallica zonden een stevige aardschok door de metalunderground. Fans van Judas Priest en Motörhead stonden met hun oren te klapperen: hier was een jonge groep die nóg sneller en nóg harder speelde dan al hun illustere voorgangers. Ook verrassend: de groep kwam uit Amerika. Tot die tijd kwamen de beste hardrockbands vooral uit Engeland. Een jonge Deense drummer had al zijn obscure Britse hardrockcassettes meegenomen toen hij met zijn ouders naar Californië verhuisde. Het knappe van Metallica was dat ze agressie en opwinding wisten te koppelen aan melodie. Het debuut Kill ‘Em All uit 1983 kende een paar nummers die uitgroeiden tot klassieke songs in de Metallica-catalogus zoals Whiplash en Seek & Destroy. (PdK)
